School-wide Field Guide Project - One of the initiatives for the Barnesville School’s Arts and Science Task Force is that the School is in the process of creating a field guide of our campus. Trees are the area of study for the 2014-15 school year. During monthly buddy meetings, students work together to explore and study the topic of trees on campus. The Science teachers support the project with instruction in their curriculum. Students are making observations, drawing sketches, using technology and working collaboratively to create reports and document their findings. Our school grounds have been divided into five zones so that each of the buddy groups have an area to explore. At the end of the year, a field guide will be created documenting student findings. Documentation of our planning process for this large project is included in the power point, below.

Our youngest students learn how to document nature on campus from our eighth graders. In the pictures above, they are working on leaf drawings and leaf rubbings. October 2014.
Brickyard Farm Partnership - We are very fortunate to have forged a strong, on-going partnership with Brickyard Farm located in Potomac, MD. Educational Director, Sophia Maravell devotes a lot of time and energy to our students, coming on campus to mentor our own vegetable garden project with the kids and hosting field trips on site at Brickyard to let the students see what their efforts might look like on a larger scale.
Echo Hill Trip, Grade 7 - Every fall, the seventh graders spend three days at the Echo Hill Outdoor School, learning about agriculture, marshes, and the Chesapeake Bay. Seventh graders gain real hands-on experience while learning about compost, livestock, and more!
Recycling - Our students have really taken ownership over school-wide recycling and we're really proud of them!! They make signage for all the bins, educate each other on what should go in each bin, and manage picking up recyclables from each classroom.
Butterfly Gardens - Our faculty is working hard to make sure that our students can leave their mark on campus. This spring, students will have the opportunity to assist in the installation and cultivation of more garden space dedicated to nurturing native species like the monarch butterfly. The purpose of this project is to create a plant environment that will support, attract or nourish native butterflies.
