13 kindergarteners study local flora - October 2013
After learning about types of leaves and different leaf characteristics, Kindergarten children go on a nature walk through the school grounds to search for examples of leaves that fit the categories they learned about: lobed, dentil, hand shaped, complex and simple. Once they return to the classroom with their samples, they work in groups to sort and classify the different types of leaves. They also use the app Leafsnap on their iPads to help them identify the trees from which the leaves originated.
kindergarteners study the earth - February 2014
Students learn about how the sun travels through the sky due to the earth’s rotation. They travel outdoors at several times throughout the day to the same location to observe their shadows and how they change based upon the time of day. The children trace each other’s shadows on the sidewalk using chalk. At the end of the day, comparisons are made about the size of the shadows through the day.

Library books come to life!
Library class isn't just books at Barnesville. Mrs. Barr, our librarian, likes to incorporate hands-on activities to go with the stories she read to the students, such as this bean planting activity that accompanied some stories on seeds.
