Brickyard Farm
Brickyard Educational Farm - since 2013, Barnesville has partnered with Brickyard Farm, a Potomac nonprofit striving to improve the Chesapeake Bay watershed through the practice and teaching of sustainable agriculture. Our second graders (12 students) work with Sophia Maravell from Brickyard to grow and harvest local crops, as well as learn about seed saving and storage.
Trout in the Classroom - Trout Unlimited
During the months of January - May, the middle school science lab becomes home to some special visitors, compliments of Trout Unlimited. We participate in a Trout Unlimited educational program called Trout in the Classroom (TIC). Sonny Bell, our regional coordinator, with the help of Maryland TIC Director, Chuck Dinkle, has been instrumental in making sure that our program runs smoothly for the students and for the trout. Sonny Bell visited our classroom to show us how to set up our tank, how to test water, and how to determine the overall health of our trout, once they hatch. In May, Mr. Bell will return to Barnesville to transport the trout to Little Seneca Creek and direct the trout release with the students.
Above is a picture of our trout taken on February 18, 2015. The Trout Unlimited TIC Manual is also in the picture. To the right, you can see an email documenting Sonny Bell's visit to campus to help us set up a new filter for our trout.

Frederick rescue mission - dwelling place
Every year, the eighth grade class partners with Frederick Rescue Mission / The Dwelling Place to learn about resource scarcity and act in the interest of social justice. The 8th grade traveled to the Frederick Rescue Mission twice in 2014 (October and January) to serve food to the homeless, organize and stock the food pantry and clean the dining area. Each year a guest speaker comes to Barnesville to discuss homelessness before students participate in the Halloween Homeless Walkathon on the school's campus. In classes, teachers tie these experiences to topics in resource conservation. |
