8 Third graders are for the birds!
Third graders used Owl Moon by Jane Yolen for a cross curricular connection, linking Art and Science. This integrated project used the story to understand the elements of a personal narrative and visualize with the five senses in language arts. Attention was given to the setting, noticing the story takes place in a forest during the winter, in the middle of the night. The students watched a short video to learn facts about owls. Then each student used their imagination to create a water color painting, setting a tone for the story. A game was played to recognize an owl's keen sense of hearing. A pine cone bird feeder was made by each student to hang in the trees in Explorer Woods as we pretended to go owling.
