certified wildlife habitat
In October of 2014, Barnesville was certified a National Wildlife Habitat by the National Wildlife Federation for sustaining and promoting natural habitats on campus.
green cup challenge
Middle School students participated in the Green Cup Energy Challenge in January 2014. Students shared energy conservation tips during Morning Meeting to help create awareness about saving energy on campus. The whole school was challenged to reduce overall energy consumption by 10% earning us fourth place among other schools in the region participated in this challenge in Montgomery County. In 2014, Barnesville School of Arts and Sciences earned the title of "Recycling Stewards," the second highest distinction in the competition.
sustainability conference
In April of 2014, six middle school students attended the Sustainability Conference at the St. Stephens/St. Agnes School in Virginia. The keynote speaker was Stephen Ritz, activist, science teacher and founder of the Green Bronx Machine. He spoke to the students about making a difference with recycling, reusing and re-purposing. This year, in January 2015, six other Middle School students participated in the same conference. The keynote speaker was Ian Cheney. He is most known for his documentary called, “King Corn.” He talked to the students about agriculture and farming in the United States and the impact of corn on the American diet. He also inspired the students with his "Truck Farm" project, challenging them to find ways to grow small gardens in the spaces available to them, no matter how unconventional. During the conference, students also participated in a variety of workshops on sustainability.
