fox haven farm full faculty retreat
august 2014
Barnesville’s entire teaching faculty (22) and senior administration (3) began the 2014-2015 school year on August 26, 2014 at Fox Haven Farm and Learning Center in Jefferson, MD (www.foxhavenlearningcenter.org). The purpose of our day-long in-service retreat was to kick off our MAEOE Green School Recertification efforts and educate all faculty about new ways to engage students outdoors. During the course of our professional development, we learned about Fox Haven’s mission and offerings, and we learned lessons in environmental education, sustainability, and gardening. From this initial meeting, the faculty field-tested the beginning of a Barnesville Field Guide, and this feedback led the group to further focus on exploring trees as the first step of the multi-year project. During the course of the retreat, educators and administrators worked in groups to document, record, and draw pictures of nature on the grounds of the campus. These pictures became part of a year-round hallway display.
