Halloween walk-a-thon
When Barnesville students celebrate Halloween, they also have a Walk-a-thon for the The Dwelling Place, a transitional home providing support services for the homeless, and for the Fredrick Rescue Mission, which provides residential recovery programs to the homeless, food to the hungry, and clothing and furniture to the needy. In addition to raising money for two great causes, the entire school (153 students) has the opportunity to walk or run the Cross Country course prior to beginning candy-full Halloween festivities.
apple day
Each Wednesday, during September, October, and November, all 153 students at Barnesville are offered local, fresh apples for a snack. One and half bushels of apples are purchased from Kingsbury Orchard, a 100 year old orchard located approximately one mile from the school. The apples are purchased each week to provide snacks for all of the students, faculty and staff. The apples are boxed and made available at the entrance of each of our school buildings each Wednesday morning. A container for the apple cores is placed next to each box of apples. Students are encouraged to return the apple core when finished so that our 5th graders may compost them.
barnesville color dash
Barnesville School hosted its first annual Color Dash on November 8, 2014. The Color Dash was a community-building event with a focus on family time and living and modeling a healthy lifestyle. The run was less about time and more about encouraging families to make fitness a fun, family-focused activity. The course was a one mile loop on the 50-acre campus of the Barnesville School, located in the Agricultural Reserve of Montgomery County, Maryland, and traversed through fields and up and down minor hills. Runners were encouraged to complete the loop 3.1 times if they were interested in running a full 5k.
