12 second graders learn conservation and native american tradition
The 2nd grade curriculum and experience is chock full of green school related activities and events. Within our curriculum there is a whole Science unit that is based on recycling and sustainability. Throughout our study of Native Americans we focus on how the Native Americans were very frugal and took only what they needed from the earth. We also focus on how the Native Americans thanked the Mother Earth for what she provides, and learned about the differences in climate and habitats. Second grade partners with Brickyard Educational Farms to learn all about organic farming, and engages in organic farming and planting techniques. A larger portion of our curriculum-related field trips expose us to activities and presentations that enrich our minds in the areas of animal habitats and animal adaptations. This is especially apparent in our reading unit entitled, "Amazing Animals," and in our Science Unit of Dinosaurs. Our Geology Unit focuses on the solid forms of earth and understanding all of the wonderful landforms we have, and what we use and need from the earth, but also how we should be stewards of the earth too!

second graders learn farming first hand
As evidenced in our other application sections (Partnerships and Top 5 Highlights), our second graders enjoy a rich, year-long partnership with Brickyard Farm where they learn permaculture farming techniques and grow their own garden. Our second graders are also forging a new partnership with Agriturf and other local farms in Poolesville, Maryland.
